Alistair McCallum
Alistair has practiced the 300 year old Japanese metalworking technique of Mokume Gane (wood grain metal) for over 30 years. The technique involves soldering different metals together to produce a sandwich. A pattern is produced by breaking through the top layer of metal into the ones below, exposing their different colours. It is the development and exploration of different ways of producing pattern that distinguishes Alistair’s work from other practitioners. Due to the highly decorative surface patterns produced using this technique, Alistair strongly believes that it is best used on simple forms, where the relationship of pattern to the form is in harmony. This element of balance is something he became aware of when visiting Japan in 1978.
