Catherine Clark
Catherine studied Graphics at Central St Martin and her strong sense of visual appeal is reflected in her work. She thoughtfully and provocatively examines the interaction between the body and ornamentation of the body. She uses metalsmithing techniques of chasing and repoussé to create sculptural forms in fine silver and gold that encircles necks, arms, and ears. The plant series of leaf and flower forms are based on botanical specimens significant in the history of ornamentation. Instead of using these symbolically rich botanicals in miniature, as the basis of ornamenting a traditional form of jewellery, she has developed a life size form for her pieces from the plant itself. Catherine is inspired by the notion of botanical nature being an original source of ornamentation for many centuries. The organic form of the life sized botanical pieces dictate the shape it must take as a piece of jewellery to be worn on the body.
