Deborah Phillips-Reid
After numerous years raising a family and working within the retail industry, Deborah decided to allow her artistic side to shine. This new direction in her life led to a degree in Silversmithing, Goldsmithing and Jewellery at the University College of the Creative Arts at Rochester in Kent. The degree allowed her incorporate many of her interests within her design work, such as her love of nature and photography. The inspiration for many of my designs comes from floral forms, which she photographs in her garden. Then she translates the organic sensuous curves of these forms into geometric motifs. Her work encompasses both jewellery and silversmithing in mixed metals and other media. Her designs are worked using both traditional handcrafted techniques, such as piercing, and the newer technologies, such as CAD. Deborah also works with laminated coloured acrylic. The acrylic is shaped, either by hand or by turning on a lathe, into miniature perfume bottles. The pieces are highly polished to give a glass like finish. Each piece is unique as no two pieces can ever be exactly the same.
