Emma McCallum
Emma’s collection of silverware explores form and pattern with both traditional metal hand raising techniques and spinning. Hollow silver forms are hand decorated using a small steel-chasing tool. Chasing allows Emma to work the annealed metal surface, carefully hammering along the objects exterior leaving behind the struck marks that gradually when repeated make up the desired pattern. The natural distortion of the metal and form that occurs during this process is intriguing and is paramount in her design development; each piece from the collection is connected by this process. The inspirations for her chased patterns derive from photography, which is fundamental in her design development. Printmaking and drawing allow her to translate and refine sections of her photography into the quality of line captured within her silversmithing.
