Gerry Summers
Gerry Summers was born in a small Highland village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The son of a traditional blacksmith, his childhood was spent watching his father shoe horses and mend ploughs. He took to metalwork, but on a smaller and considerably more precious scale. He studied Jewellery Design at the Central School of Art and Design in London enjoying the fertile and nebulous flux of excitement and creativity during the Punk and New Romantic periods of the late seventies. He established his own business in 1983 and immediately created an impact in those early years with prizes for design in competitions including The Goldsmiths Competition, The Platinum Award and De Beers Diamonds Tomorrow. Prestigious commissions followed with a suite of jewellery for Diana Ross, a brooch for The South African Embassy in London, sponsored by Ayerton Metals and a commission to design and create the Jewellery for the 1987 Pirelli Calendar. Gerry Summers Jewellery is sold in galleries in London, New York, California, Spain, France and Scotland and he enjoys promoting his exquisite work at events such as Elton John’s Oscar Parties and the Cannes Film Festival. Colour is a major part of his work with the use of large precious stones including Tourmaline, Aquamarine, Tanzanite, and Spessartite highlighted with fine quality diamonds. The inspiration for his enchanting jewels has come from a desire to create a symbiosis of natural form and pure geometry and is heavily influenced by the art of ancient cultures.
